Long overdue update
Sorry about a long gap again. Blogging definitely takes a 6th row to a host of other joys. So to get you caught up quickly some Q and A.
Q: Hey you lazy oaf, did you do anything?
A: I had my solo show at the Topanga Canyon Gallery. It was great. The person I was to share the gallery with came down with C-19 so I ended up being able to have the entire space to myself. I had 6 clocks, 4 light sculptures, 1 table and about 12 big matrix pieces up. It took a lot to get those all ready for prime time, hung, and all the cords managed. The reception was everything I could have asked for in terms of interest. There is a summary of this in Exhibitions/shows section. I really enjoyed just sitting there surrounded by all those matrix pieces working at the same time. The audio responsive ones in particular worked well. I also had time to spare while sitting the gallery and worked on some new pattern and variability ideas. My work in that area continues to being me joy.
Q: So, you had something to keep you out of trouble. What else happened?
A: I participated in the Malibu Arts Association Holiday show that was held at the Malibu Bungalows. I believe we had about 50 artists in place. Good response and a lot of sales despite the weather on the 2nd day being poor. I had the perfect setup, in a very dark room (aka the dungeon). This show marked the debut of a collaborative piece I made with Carla Bates. She painted some palms on a large clock face. I love it. It is on the left in the photo below.
It was great to interact with all the other local artists. I made some new friends and several clocks found new homes along with some baskets and critters. I had not really been showing the baskets over the last few years and the interest has caused a relaunch of those along several lines. I now have several of the round baskets at the Creo Art house in the Malibu Country Mart. and hope to have more at other local shops soon.
Q: Did anything else happen?
A: Yes, In January, I was invited to have my clocks and lanterns at Compound Contemporary, a new gallery that has opened in Thousand Oaks, CA. This is Risk’s gallery. I manage to get a display for clocks and lanterns up and working on short notice. This gallery came together very quickly. We had a “soft” opening that only attracted about 600 people the first night (it was a mob). I am grateful for this opportunity to have my work in the same exhibit space as these contemporary giants (Risk, Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison, Shepard Fairey, Bernie Taupin…). This appears to be a semi-permanent position which is terrific.
I made Risk a custom clock based on a print of his iconic “Riskolium” Pain spray can. You can see it behind him on the right in the photo below. I struggled on this but in the end, like how it came out. More of these may be available in the gallery soon. The gallery is open by appointment only but that ends up being almost every day and they welcome foot traffic. So, if you are in the area….
Q: Wow, you really are a bore. What else happened?
A: I continue to have success at the Track Park Gallery in Malibu. I introduced the mirror faced clocks including the large format (16 x 16 inch) mirror clock there in the fall and they have done well. I am as ever amazed by and grateful for this opportunity to show my work. I am so lucky to have met Tracy. I would not be here discussing my art were it not for her support.
Q: Is that all?
A: No, I also joined another new gallery. The Los Angeles Art Association. They work out of Gallery 825 in LA. I recently entered a few pieces for consideration in the upcoming show and one of them, “32 strangers: a short story” which is a matrix piece with a subset of patterns based around narrative in contemporary art, was selected for a show that runs March 4 to April 7th. Reception on March 4th 2023, 10a to 5p. If you are local to LA on the 4th , come visit. I will be there for the reception.
Q: You really are a slacker aren’t you?
A: Yes, I also have been working to add more laser design files to my Etsy shop. I recently added some stacked layered basket designs and some critter designs. I am working to add more stackable baskets soon.
